Plus size bras don’t have to be frumpy.

Many women who haven’t been “blessed” with larger chest sizes would consider the search for plus size bras a not-so-rough problem to have. But for those who do have to find plus size bras, it’s not a walk in the park by any stretch of the imagination. While the situation may have improved over the last few years, most manufacturers see plus size bras as needing to be as frumpy and boring as they are large and supportive.

Plus size bras carry with them a special set of requirements, just like sport bras and maternity bras. While the basic need is the same – to support the breast and provide comfort – the plus size bra must also help relieve some of the back pain associated with larger breasts, keep from cutting into the shoulders, and not be too obvious through the outer clothing’s fabric. And plus size bras need to do all of this while still filling their basic role as a bra!

The problem is that, while manufacturers have found ways of satisfying all of these requirements, they stop there. Plus size bras are typically not very attractive or appealing to the eye. For all of the variety a woman can find in sport bras and even maternity bras, there is far less in plus size bras. Typical plus size bras are white, thick spandex lycra. They may have some lace edging, they may have a small design on the material, and they may come in variations like black or beige, but plus size bras are not designed to the same aesthetic specifications as “normal” bras.

While cup sizes A-C get to choose from cute designs in contrasting lace, beautiful edging, matching panties, ribbons and bows, and any number of other little touches, those in plus size bras (D and up) can flesh out their underwear wardrobe with innumerable sets of white, beige, and black. When it is possible to find plus size bras in prettier colors and patterns, the cost increases exponentially.
